The Watermelon Capital

On October 23, 1889, Coleman, Georgia in Southwest Randolph County was incorporated as a town. A settlement was here as early as 1858 when Andy Coleman donated the land for the
town. The railroad came through Coleman from Cuthbert to Fort Gaines in 1860, and the Post Office was established with Leonard C. Bell as postmaster and depot agent.

In 1889, after a typhoid fever epidemic which caused many deaths, Coleman citizens built a cotton gin and warehouse. Dr. W.T. Rogers gave land in 1888 to be used for a school building. The school developed into one of the best in the county. It consolidated with Cuthbert in 1947. For many years in the late 1800s, Coleman shipped large quantities of watermelons to market with three to five hundred acres annually planted in melons.
